Tamara Dawit

Tamara Dawit is an Ethiopian-Canadian filmmaker, producer, and policy consultant based in Toronto and Addis Ababa. She is the founder of Gobez Media, a company dedicated to producing African and diaspora screen content. An alumna of Berlinale Talents and EAVE, Tamara has produced a wide range of award-winning work, including Girls of Latitude (2008: MTV), Grandma Knows Best (2014: BRAVO), Finding Sally (2020: Hot Docs), Alazar (2024: Critics’ Week Cannes), and Made in Ethiopia (2024: Tribeca, Sheffield). Tamara served as the inaugural Vice President of Inclusion and Growth at the Canada Media Fund (CMF), where she led the development of inclusion-focused programs and policies. She previously worked at FACTOR, managing industry initiatives for Canadian music. As a consultant, she advises funders and screen organizations on inclusive policy and funding models. Her clients include DW Akademie, the Ethiopian government, EAVE, the European Union and Afreximbank. Her work has earned numerous accolades, including the Doc Institute Vanguard Award, the Gordon Parks Award for Black Excellence in Filmmaking (TIFF 2021), and fellowships from the Chalmers Arts Fellowship (2023) and MacDowell (2024).
