Rick Treweek

Rick Treweek is a South African artist, creative technologist and immersive storyteller whose practice exists between the physical and virtual worlds. Working across virtual reality, digital sculpture, interactive installation, game worlds and immersive theatre, he explores how technology can transform the way we experience space, identity and storytelling. Treweek is the creator of Uncanny Alley, a dystopian virtual universe that began in VRChat and has evolved into an ongoing artistic world. The project has been presented at Venice Immersive and Raindance Immersive, with Uncanny Alley: A New Day premiering in competition at Venice in 2024. Treweek served as co-creator, art director, world designer and lead developer. The work went on to receive international recognition including the Fanheart3 XR Fan Experience Award and XR Must awards, and was nominated for an Emmy® for Outstanding Emerging Media Program. His art is a constant conversation between what is real and what is simulated — physical objects become digital worlds, digital characters acquire human presence, and virtual spaces become places for genuine connection. For Treweek, the virtual world is not an escape from reality, but another place in which reality can be questioned.
