Nathan Rice

Nathan Rice, an award-winning South African filmmaker, has a diverse range of work spanning feature films, documentaries, short films, and music videos. With a deep passion for cinema, he’s known for bringing compelling stories to life. Born in 1989, Nathan’s filmmaking journey began at the age of 12. His passion for storytelling led to a prolific career. He graduated from AFDA Durban in 2015 with a BA in Motion Picture Writing and Directing. His graduation film, Homeless, earned critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Student Academy Awards. This success marked his innovative and collaborative career exploring the human condition through film. In 2016, Nathan co-founded Untitled Entertainment with John Hlongwane, showcasing his directing versatility. His debut feature, The Road Less Cycled (2020), mentored by Sarah Blecher, premiered on Amazon Prime Video. He also co-directed Lilith: The Ground Beneath Her Feet (2022) with his brother. Nathan effortlessly navigates fiction and non-fiction, winning awards for short films like Dream Writer (2022), Ngikhona (2021), and Faulty (2017). His documentaries, Grassland (2022) and Ulwandle Lushile (2020), highlight environmental and social issues, earning him the Africa Rising Star Award from NEWF in 2021.
