Masterclass: Good Sound Starts Before the Mix - How to get the Best out of your Sound - Pre-Production Planning, Production Support and Post-Production

This session is presented by Netflix.

In this engaging masterclass presented by Netflix, filmmakers will explore how thoughtful planning and creative collaboration can transform the way you use sound to tell your story. Aimed at directors and producers, the session follows the full sound journey – from pre-production through to final mix – revealing how the best results come from decisions made early, not just in post. Too often, sound is treated as an afterthought. But what if you could anticipate challenges before they become expensive problems? What if the creative opportunities of sound design, Foley, and music were baked into your production plan, rather than squeezed in later?

This session invites you to reframe your approach, placing sound at the heart of your storytelling. Leading the session is Guy steer, Supervising Sound Editor and founder of Rechord Post, whose work on titles like Unseen and Yoh Christmas reflects both world-class quality and deep understanding of the South African production landscape. Guy brings real insight into the pressures local producers face (tight timelines, complex locations, limited resources) and how smart planning can turn those constraints into strengths.

Joining him is Michael Broomberg, one of the most acclaimed Foley Artists working today. With credits including War of the Worlds, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Venom, and 300, Michael has shaped the sound of global cinema. His creative process, developed over more than 160 feature films, is rooted in precision, imagination, and storytelling through texture and movement.

Together, they’ll share case studies, practical advice, and behind-the-scenes lessons that will inspire you to hear your work differently and treat sound as a creative partner from the very beginning.

Palestinian cinema emerges as a record of the people’s dreams, hopes and struggles. It is evidence of the land we miss, an image of the people we lost, and an archive of a future to shape and inhabit. This is why the Palestine Film Institute (PFI) emphasises the importance of supporting Palestinian films and narratives in international forums. This year, the PFI presents 3 feature films at the Durban FilmMart for the second time, enabling filmmakers and producers to showcase feature films about Palestine to decision-makers and festival programmers on their own terms, and providing a vital platform to engage with the global film community and participate in industry events. Through the experiences of four NAAS members (Sudan Film Factory, Film Lab Palestine, Palestine Film Institute, and Cimatheque Cairo) this conversation unpacks how we work together despite different local realities, how we build joint programs and how NAAS practices solidarity and sustainability through regionally grounded models.

AI's Impact in Production Processes from Writing, Performance, Animation, and Editing

This session is presented in partnership with the South African Guild of Actors (SAGA).

AI is a disruptive technology that has broken barriers, cut production costs, made locations more accessible, and reduced the need for expensive technical equipment. It has transcended barriers of communications and given us the opportunity to tell a vast array of stories – from cultures that no longer exist to planets and frontiers that exist only in the imagination. AI has become the bridge to telling all stories in all dimensions.

But there’s a downside too – an existential threat to performers, voice artists, editors, animators, writers, and photographers. SAGA’s panel discussion will explore this year’s theme through the lens of harnessing the power of AI in storytelling – without risking our humanity in the process.

The African Aesthetic: What Makes African Stories Unique?

This session is presented in partnership with the Writers Guild of South Africa (WGSA).

When you speak of Nollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood, people can immediately conjure up images of the style and flare of films and stories that those regions thrive on. Even on a country by country basis, K-Drama, Japanese, French and even Italian film all have very distinct storytelling styles. Can we say the same for films and television from the African diaspora? Do we have unique storytelling voices that make our stories stand out from others? Do we sufficiently tap into our rich history of storytelling in modern ways? And in a world of increasing globalisation, is there space for African storytellers to collaborate with writers and filmmakers from across the African diaspora and from other regions of the world?

DFM Alumni Screening at DIFF: The Home

Directed by Jessie Zinn

The Home weighs in as a good-humored portrait of the oldest and largest Jewish homes in South Africa as its clients kvetch about companions and battle to elect a new Resident Committee. The residents are attended – with notable affection – by carers who are mostly Xhosa-speaking Black women working on minimum wages. “The Home” works as a gentle observational comedy but it’s also a record of a microcosmos of South Africa today, where a legacy of racial and economic segregation still lingers.

I.M.P.A.C.T: Owning the Future - Black Producers Bridging Worlds Through I.M.P.A.C.T

This session is presented by Independent Media Producers Association of Creative Talent (I.M.P.A.C.T).

In a world still shaped by the systemic exclusion of Black voices in the global screen industry, I.M.P.A.C.T. stands as a catalyst for transformation. This session spotlights the visionary leadership of I.M.P.A.C.T.’s Founder, Samantha Kaine, and the next generation of Black producers from the Producer Career Catalyst Program (PCCP)—a bold initiative empowering Black creatives to claim ownership of their stories, businesses, and futures.

Framed by the DFM 2025 theme “Bridges Not Borders: Stories That Unite,” this conversation explores how PCCP participants are dismantling outdated industry models, forging international co-production opportunities, and building sustainable careers rooted in cultural sovereignty, strategy, and solidarity. Through a series of case studies and personal reflections, participants will share how cross-continental collaboration, culturally grounded mentorship, and intentional market access are key to not just surviving, but leading in today’s global content economy.

This is more than a spotlight – it’s a statement: Black producers are not waiting for inclusion. They are building bridges to new systems, new audiences, and a future where their ownership is non-negotiable.

Bridges Take Many Hands and Bricks to Build

This session is presented in partnership with the Documentary Filmmakers’ Association (DFA).

Non-fiction filmmaking is undergoing a profound state of flux globally, presenting enormous opportunity for some, but posing serious jeopardy for others. African non-fiction producers, in particular, are facing unprecedented pressure, with many questioning whether they stand at a crossroads: continue relying on external funding models that shape their narratives, or take control of the industry through ownership, collaboration, and innovation. This session challenges filmmakers to rethink their strategies and push for a more equitable value chain.

African Editor Organisations Talking Together, Towards Working Together

This session is presented in partnership with the South African Guild of Editors (SAGE) and TEMPO

If we consider independent filmmaking as a primarily socialist project that morphs into a capitalist venture, we must accept a political history on the continent that is historically Pan-African but has moved towards a market economy. Why do we find ourselves mostly only working in our own countries, and how does it look when we work across boundaries? What does it mean in practical terms, when it comes to communication, vision, delivery, and a shared future? How can we share resources across visible, invisible, and indivisible borders within a visual medium?

This session reflects on the role of editors, who not only hold story construction in the edit stage but also the technical execution of a project in its final phases – towards packaging and distribution. How are industry organisations who represent editors in Africa working towards sharing resources, knowledge, and partnerships?

DFM Alumni Screening at DIFF: The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos

Directed by The Agbajowo Collective: James Tayler, Ogungbamila Temitope, Okechukwu Samuel, Mathew Cerf, Tina Edukpo, Bisola Akinmuyiwa, A.S. Elijah

Jawu lives in one of the floating slums pushed into the lagoon which gives the megacity Lagos its name- a young mother scraping by in an indifferent city. However, the spirit of the great warrior king Egbaezen has marked her for a terrible responsibility and ordeal. Danger now threatens people, as corrupt officials conspire to evict thousands from their ancestral homes. Egbaezen’s spirit takes the form of an African Grey parrot, and sets in motion a chain of events that will change Jaw and her entire community forever.
