Durban FilmMart announces award-winners for 2022 Projects
The curtain has come down on the 13th edition of the Durban FilmMart, with the announcement of the 2022 DFM Awards on Sunday, 31 July.
Africa’s premier film industry event which this year embraced the digital shift by hosting virtual sessions alongside an in-person 3-day industry event was attended by film professionals the at Durban’s Tsogo Sun Elangeni Hotel.
The Mart once again shone the spotlight brightly on the best that African film has to offer while panning into Industry Talks around critical issues and trends facing African filmmakers.
The virtual DFM programme included 40 projects in development that participated in the Pitch and Finance Forum; 100 completed and works in progress projects were presented at the Content Shop; and 40 engagement sessions were held through Industry Panel Discussions.
Magdalene Reddy, General Manager of the DFM said it was great to host a cast of industry professionals from around the world for an in-person event while still having a virtual presence.
“The quality of the physical programme presentations as well as the virtual stream again highlighted the exceptional talent our continent has to offer. Diversity, inclusivity and access is at the core of the Durban FilmMart Institute and this came out strongly in the curation of this year’s event,” Reddy said.
AWARD WINNERS:
DFM Talents Durban Award went to The Darker Side of Afrobeats (Nigeria).
Director Aderonke Adeola will participate at DFM 2023 programme.
The DOK.fest München Award went to Trash Cemetery (Tunisia).
Producer and Director Firas Rebii and Dhia Rebii will be able to participate in the DOK.forum Marketplace.
The Rotterdam Lab Award was awarded to Captain Mbaye (Senegal/Rwanda).
Producer Katy Lena Ndiaye and Director, Joel Karekezi will participate in the Rotterdam Lab.
The DOK Leipzig Award went to Kange (Democratic Republic of Congo). Producer and Director Arnold Aganze and Director Ali Musoke will be given accreditations for DOK Leipzig 2023 and participate in the selected project in the DOK Co-Pro Market. The prize flights and accommodation.
Gotham Week Award went to Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Egypt/France).
Producer, Marwa Abdalla, Co-producer, Claire Chassagne and Director, Mohamed Samir have been selected for the Gotham Week Coproduction Market.
IDFA Spotlight Award is awarded to Khamseen Mitr (50 Meters) (Egypt).
Producer: Ahmed Amer and Director, Yomna Khattab will take part at the IDFA’s next edition and participate in a tailor-made programme within the IDFA Industry and training activities.
The Produire au Sud of Festival des 3 Continents / IFAS Award went to Aisha Can’t Fly Away Anymore (Egypt/Sweden).
Producer Sawsan Yusuf and Director, Morad Mostafa will be given the opportunity to attend the developmental workshop programme, PAS, where they are supported with developing tools, expertise, and opportunities to forge European networks.
Miradas Doc Award went to Trash Cemetery (Tunisia).
Producers, Firas Rebiai and Dhia Rebii and Director: Firas Rebiai will participate in the Miradasdoc 2022. The prize includes flights, accommodation and accreditation.
The Sørfond Award was awarded to The Camera Never Lies (Sudan).
Producer, Alyaa Musa and Directors Abuzar Adam and Elsadig Abdelgayoum will be given the opportunity to attend a pitch course at the Sørfond Pitching Forum in Oslo, Norway
The FIDA DOC Award went to Khamseen Mitr (50 Meters) (Egypt).
Producer, Ahmed Amer and Director Yomna Khattab will be provided flights, accreditation and accommodation to participate in the FIDADOC Writing Residency 2022.
OIF-ACP-EU Award went to Specters of Alhoot (Sudan). Producer and Director Ahmad Mahmoud will received mentorship from the OIF collaboration.
DocA Award went to Kange (Democratic Republic of Congo). Producer: Arnold Aganze and Ali Musoke and Director: Arnold Aganze will receive mentorship through the DocA programme.
MIP Africa MIP Special Invitation was awarded to:
- Captain Mbaye (Senegal/Rwanda) – Producer: Katy Lena Ndiaye and Director: Joel Karekezi
- Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Egypt/France) – Producer: Marwa Abdalla Co-producer: Claire Chassagne Director: Mohamed Samir
- Funny Business (South Africa) – Producer: Cati Weinek and Director: Sibusiso Khuzwayo
- Black Burns Fast (South Africa) – Producer: Cait Pansegrouw and Elias Ribiero and Director: Sandulela Asanda
The winners will attend MIP Africa/ Fameweek.
Fak’ugesi Animation Award went to Grit (Nigeria).
Producer and Director Ajibola Adewole-Oyebokun will be offered a hybrid residency programme from 13-21 October 2022 during the Fak’ugesi festival.
Hot Docs-Blue Ice Docs Award went to Plagued (South Africa). Producers: Nicole Schafer and Teboho Pietersen are awarded $1,000 CAD by Hot Docs-Blue Ice Docs Fund Pitch Prize.
The Whickers Bursary was awarded to Khamseen Mitr (50 Meters) (Egypt). Producer, Ahmed Amer and Director, Yomna Khattab are awarded a £3,000 bursary.
TRT Award went to The Missing Camel (Mauritania). Producers, Iham Raouf, Maud Huynh and Director, Cheikh N’diaye are awarded 3000 USD.
National Film and Video Foundation Award for Best Non-Fiction went to Sharp End of A Knife Producer and Director: Godisamang Khunou
National Film and Video Foundation Award for Fiction was awarded to Black Burns Fast (South Africa) – Producers: Cait Pansegrouw and Elias Ribiero and Director: Sandulela Asanda.
Both projects receive a cash prize of R100 000 each.
The DFM 2022 programme will become available on the DFMI website after a month.
The Durban FilmMart Institute receives principal funding from the Durban Film Office and the eThekwini Municipality.
